Animal activist and ambassador for the American Humane Society, Jean Shafiroff, explains the importance of compatibility with our furry friends: “They need to get along,” she says, “and that can happen over time, but they have to have an understanding of one another. Generally, people like other people that are similar [to themselves] and that goes for animals, too. They like animals that they can relate to.”

Aries is a very headstrong sign that also possesses tremendous leadership qualities. Therefore, an Aries would likely prefer a dog breed that reflects these characteristics and is able to follow their lead. Taurus is a loyal and reliable sign that prefers the finer things in life. It’s no surprise that Shafiroff assigned several working dog breeds to Virgo: Border Collie (above), Greyhound, Pointer, Shetland Sheepdog and Spanish Waterdog. Ever the analytical, hardworking and determined sign, Virgo would appreciate a dog that reflects its own values. But there’s more to Virgo—and to these breeds—than their productivity. “I find that Virgos are very sensitive, too,” she says. “Sensitivities aren’t necessarily shown. Sometimes people are very sensitive but they mask that, just the way these dogs could.” This is why it is important to spend adequate time with a dog before officially adopting it.

Libra is often considered the gentlest and most polite zodiac sign. This sign loves balance and harmony which is why they would benefit from a relationship with a dog who is easygoing and bursting with love. While some people have a fear of bigger dogs, big dogs can actually turn out to be more warm and cuddly than smaller ones. The Newfoundland is the perfect example. A grown male can weigh up to 68 kilograms or more, but any dog expert will tell you that these dogs are entirely made up of sweetness and devotion. Only a dog with equal amounts of these traits could mesh well with a Scorpio. “A strong person wants a strong dog,” Shafiroff says, which is why she recommends Bloodhound, Bull Mastiff, Golden Retriever (above) and Pitbull for a Scorpio. Some of these breeds can be intimidating, especially if you don’t know much about them, but they can also be very sweet. Shafiroff reiterates the popular saying, “There are no bad dogs, there are bad owners.” Some of these dogs are more rambunctious than others, but a Scorpio can definitely handle it.

The Aquarius is unique among the signs. They’re highly original, smart, independent and humanitarian to boot. So dogs that stand out would immediately attract an Aquarius—and vice versa. Take the Lhasa Apso (above), for example. Just looking at this dog’s famously long hair is striking. The American Kennel Club describes the dog’s temperament as “confident and complex.” Sounds like an Aquarius alright! Other dog breeds that would suit this sign include Collie, Havanese, Labrador Retriever and Poodle.
