The Expert Says:
Siberian Huskies and other northern dog breeds are best suited to experienced dog owners, but with good guidance from other individuals with ‘northern breed’ experience, even first-time pet owners can have a
rewarding relationship with them!
The most important thing to remember with northern breeds is they do best in a home that provides them with plenty of exercise. If they are not given an appropriate outlet for their high energy they can resort to destructive behaviour like chewing, digging and plotting escapes. Often, owning a second dog as a playmate is an effective solution to get them both burning energy, and you can look into skijorring, bikejoring, scootering or mushing. The challenge in training northern breeds is that they bore easily and the standard dog training techniques that involve a lot of repetition might not work. Training sessions need to be short and fun to keep a husky motivated and wanting to work with you! Good luck!
